Key Responsibilities
- Automated Line & PLC Machinery Operation
- · Set up, calibrate, and operate computerized sawmill processing lines via Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) consoles.
- · Monitor real-time laser scanner data, automated log positioning systems, and blade settings to maximize timber yield.
- · Identify operational faults, sensor misalignments, or machine error codes, making manual micro-adjustments to PLC inputs when necessary.
- Production & Secondary Processing
- · Process raw logs into structural, dimensional timber, pallets, or custom-cut boards.
- · Execute precise cutting programs according to daily orders, minimizing material waste.
- · Manage log feeds, automated sizing decks, and sorters.
- Carpentry & Fabrication
- · Perform basic carpentry tasks, including custom timber ripping, jointing, framing adjustments, and assembling bespoke timber products.
- · Use manual woodworking power tools (miter saws, circular saws, handheld routers, nail guns) alongside automated lines.
- Quality Control & Preventative Maintenance
- · Perform ongoing dimensional checks, moisture readings, and visual visual grading on processed wood against quality specs.
- · Perform daily machine checks, blade changes, alignment calibrations, and basic mechanical/pneumatic troubleshooting.
- · Clean and maintain machinery components, photo eyes, and sensors to prevent operational downtime.
Requirements
- Required: Minimum 2–3 years of direct experience working on an automated or semi-automated timber manufacturing/sawmill line.
- · Required: Proven experience operating machinery controlled by PLC software/HMI touchscreens.
- · Required: Basic carpentry or joinery experience (ability to read timber cutting lists and use manual power tools safely).
- · Desirable: Formal technical qualification or apprenticeship in Woodworking Technology, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or Carpentry.
- Technical
Skills
- · Competency in interpreting PLC error codes and adjusting cutting software settings.
- · Knowledge of timber species, moisture content and wood defects.
- · Ability to safely perform blade, chain, and belt replacements.
