About this role

A secondary English teacher is responsible for teaching English language and literature, developing students’ communication skills, and preparing them for exams while fostering critical thinking and a love of learning.

Core Teaching Responsibilities

Secondary English teachers teach students aged 11–16 (Key Stages 3 and 4), covering grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and literature analysis. They plan and deliver lessons aligned with the national curriculum, ensuring each class has clear objectives and a balance of instruction, demonstration, and practice. Teachers also adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs and abilities of students, encouraging interactive and engaging learning experiences

  • Assessment and Student Support

Teachers create, assign, and grade homework, tests, and projects , monitoring student progress throughout the academic year. They prepare students for standardized exams , such as GCSEs, and provide extra support to help students reach their potential. Periodic progress reports and parent-teacher meetings are part of their duties to communicate student performance and development

  • Classroom Management and Environment

Maintaining a safe, orderly, and productive classroom is essential. Teachers supervise students, enforce discipline, and foster a positive learning environment. They also ensure classrooms are well-organized and equipped with necessary resources for lectures, presentations, and activities

  • Collaboration and Professional Development

Secondary English teachers work closely with colleagues, teaching assistants, school administrators, and parents to coordinate lessons, share best practices, and support school goals.
