About the Team

Our Shared Services team provides API Platform capabilities across Elsevier, enabling API teams to onboard APIs, manage their lifecycles and monitor usage.

For public APIs, customers can create and manage credentials through our self-service developer portal. The platform also provides AI Gateway capabilities, enabling API teams to onboard MCP servers and tools, manage credentials and monitor usage through dashboards.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development and ongoing support of Elsevier's Enterprise API Platforms.

You will contribute to technical discussions and solution design, translate product requirements into high-quality software, develop test-driven code, collaborate closely with other engineers and mentor junior team members.

The team supports both legacy and new Enterprise API Platforms, with a strong focus on providing an excellent developer experience for users inside and outside Elsevier. Key priorities include smooth API onboarding, an intuitive developer portal and rapid resolution of support requests.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineers, product teams and other technical stakeholders to shape requirements and turn complex challenges into high-quality technical solutions.
• Design, build and enhance complex, scalable software components, taking ownership from specification through to delivery.
• Translate sophisticated product requirements into clean, maintainable and effective software designs.
• Solve challenging technical problems and complex defects, focusing on robust, long-term solutions.
• Champion engineering excellence through modern development practices, clean code, peer reviews and continuous improvement.
• Work effectively across Agile and other delivery environments, partnering with key stakeholders throughout the development lifecycle.
• Investigate and resolve complex technical and production issues across applications, infrastructure and cloud environments.
• Mentor and support junior engineers, sharing technical knowledge and helping to strengthen engineering capability across the team.
• Embrace AI-enabled software development, using modern AI tools to improve engineering productivity, problem-solving, code quality and development workflows.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering experience with Java and related technologies.
• Exposure to JavaScript, Groovy, JSP, HTML, XML, SQL and Bash.
• Hands-on experience with modern build and dependency-management tools, particularly Maven and Gradle.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL.
• Practical experience building and managing cloud infrastructure (Preferably AWS) with services such as Secrets Manager, Kinesis Firehouse, S3 and OpenSearch.
• Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as New Relic and Kibana, including metrics, troubleshooting and alerting.
• Strong containerisation and Kubernetes experience using technologies such as Docker, Helm and Kustomize.
• Comfortable working hands-on with Kubernetes tooling, including kubectl, k9s or similar tools, to monitor, troubleshoot and manage resources.
• Experience or strong exposure to AI-assisted development tools is highly desirable, with an interest in using AI to support coding, debugging, testing, documentation and technical problem-solving.
• Exposure/skills building Jenkins pipelines and/or GitHub Actions.
