Quantitative Engineer | Sydney

We're looking for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of software engineering, quantitative finance and financial markets.

This role would suit an experienced quantitative developer or financial software engineer with strong C#/.NET skills and a practical understanding of financial products, pricing, valuation and risk.

You should be comfortable understanding how financial instruments behave, how their cashflows and valuations are derived, and how market data such as yield curves, FX rates, volatility and inflation inputs feed into quantitative calculations.

You don't need deep expertise across every asset class, but you should have a solid foundation in quantitative finance and be comfortable understanding how common financial products are priced and valued. The ability to understand the underlying mathematics and translate quantitative requirements into robust production software is important.

We're particularly interested in people who are curious, pragmatic, able to work independently, and excited by the opportunity to modernise quantitative platforms using modern engineering practices and AI-assisted development tools.

What You'll Be Doing

  • · Collaborate with analysts, actuaries and developers to design and enhance investment, pricing and risk systems.
  • · Develop and maintain quantitative pricing, valuation and risk functionality using C#/.NET.
  • · Implement financial models and analytics across fixed income, interest rates, FX, inflation, futures, commodities and equities, as well as annuities and reinsurance.
  • · Implement and maintain cashflow generation, discounting, curve-based valuation, pricing and risk calculations for financial products.
  • · Apply quantitative finance concepts including yield curves, forward rates, discount factors, sensitivities, scenario analysis and Value at Risk (VaR).
  • · Translate spreadsheet-based, mathematical and prototype models into robust, maintainable production code.
  • · Build and maintain core quantitative libraries, market data components and valuation infrastructure.
  • · Develop tools that support actuarial modelling, asset-liability management (ALM), risk analytics and investment decision-making.
  • · Investigate and resolve issues in production calculations and modelling systems.
  • · Independently take quantitative requirements through analysis, implementation, testing and delivery, collaborating with subject matter experts where required.
  • · Contribute to model validation, peer reviews, automated testing and continuous improvement of engineering practices.
  • · Explore the use of AI-assisted development, agentic tooling and automation to improve development productivity, model quality and user experience.
  • Your Background Includes
  • · Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Actuarial Studies, Physics, Quantitative Finance or another quantitative discipline.
  • · 5–10 years of professional software development, quantitative development or financial systems experience.
  • · Strong C#/.NET development experience and a track record of delivering and supporting production systems.
  • · A working knowledge of financial products and how they are priced and valued.
  • · Understanding of financial markets, particularly fixed income, interest rates, FX and derivatives.
  • · Experience implementing or supporting pricing, valuation, risk or quantitative analytics.
  • · Ability to understand quantitative specifications, formulas and financial models and translate them into production-quality software.
  • · Ability to work independently and take ownership of moderately complex quantitative development tasks.
  • · Experience with modern software engineering practices and AI-assisted development tools.

Quantitative & Financial Skills

  • Essential
  • · Practical understanding of financial mathematics, pricing and valuation.
  • · Knowledge of fixed income and interest-rate products, including cashflows, discounting, yield curves and forward rates.
  • · Understanding of derivative pricing concepts and the relationship between market data, model inputs and valuation.
  • · Working knowledge of risk analytics, such as sensitivities, scenarios and Value at Risk (VaR).
  • · Ability to understand and implement calculations for common instruments across FX, fixed income, interest rates, inflation, futures, commodities and equities.
  • · Understanding of how market movements affect the valuation and risk of financial instruments.
  • · Comfortable working with quantitative formulas and translating them into tested production code.
  • Technical Skills Required
  • · Strong C#/.NET development experience.
  • · Experience building and supporting production software systems.
  • · Solid understanding of object-oriented design and software engineering principles.
  • · Unit testing and source control using Git.
  • · SQL and relational database development.
  • · Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly Regarded
  • · Experience developing financial pricing or risk libraries.
  • · Knowledge of bonds, swaps, FX forwards, inflation-linked instruments and futures.
  • · Experience with yield curve construction, interpolation, discounting and market data.
  • · Experience with quantitative libraries, valuation engines or risk systems.
  • · Knowledge of risk measures such as DV01/PV01, duration, sensitivities, scenario analysis or VaR.
  • · REST APIs and service-based architectures.
  • · Azure DevOps and CI/CD practices.
  • · Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • · Snowflake or cloud-based data platforms.

Nice to Have

  • · Actuarial modelling, annuities, reinsurance or insurance risk experience.
  • · Asset-liability management (ALM) knowledge.
  • · C++ exposure within quantitative or pricing environments.
  • · Broader experience across commodities, equities or inflation products.
