This Position reports to:

Chapter Lead | R&D Lab Manager

Description

Electrification, energy storage, renewable generation, and power-electronic loads are increasing interest in low-voltage DC distribution. This thesis investigates how ABB Kabeldon could contribute to future DC and hybrid AC/DC systems. The work begins with a broader assessment of applications, architectures, and portfolio opportunities.

In dialogue with ABB and the selected students, the thesis may then focus on the technical adaptation of a representative product, a broader solution concept, or identified technology gaps. The outcome may support future product development and strategic direction.

Research topics:

Investigate future low-voltage DC and hybrid AC/DC applications and evaluate how ABB Kabeldon products and technologies could contribute to these systems.

Goals:

  • Identify relevant DC applications, architectures, and technical requirements.
  • Assess the suitability and limitations of existing Kabeldon products and technologies.
  • Develop a product adaptation or solution concept for a selected opportunity.

Approach:

Review relevant low-voltage DC applications and architectures, including protection, grounding, insulation, thermal, and switching requirements. Map existing Kabeldon products and technologies against these needs. Based on the findings, select a promising area for deeper investigation and develop a product adaptation, solution concept, or future development proposal.

Details:

  • Period: Spring 2027
  • Number of students for this thesis work: 1 or 2
  • Location: ABB Alingsås
